QAs a merchant, what do I need to care about?
Nine dimensions merchants should review before joining:
Merchant snapshot
The fastest-growing social/livestream commerce platform in the US (2025 +68%); best for beauty/apparel sellers with content or creator resources. High policy and risk-control uncertainty; requires strong operations.
Entry requirements
US onboarding requires a company entity (a US company or a qualified cross-border seller) plus business license/tax information; risk control tightened in 2025 with multiple rounds of store closures/"second reviews" (bianews reports hundreds of Chinese stores closed); the deposit was raised to $1,500 (US, 2025, na_platforms.md). Content production capability (short video/livestream) or creator-affiliate resources are required. Cross-region: Southeast Asia is the most mature market (after Indonesia's 2023 ban, integrated operations via the ~$1.5B acquisition of ~75% of Tokopedia).
Fee structure
US referral fees are 6% for most categories; jewelry (diamonds/gold/jade, etc.) dropped to 5% from 2024.10.31; used items 5% (3% on the portion over $10K, compiled by m2ecloud); payment-processing fees also apply; deposit $1,500. Rate-increase rumors circulated for 2025–26 (Ecommerce Times); for specifics, refer to the latest official fee schedule.
Getting traffic
Content-driven acquisition: short-video/livestream seeding + marketplace shelf + creator-affiliate distribution, with customer-acquisition costs below traditional advertising; US GMV was $15.1B in 2025 (+68%), about 18–20% of US social commerce (eMarketer), with a halo effect driving off-platform purchases. An estimated ~57.7M US shoppers in 2026 (eMarketer); Southeast Asia GMV $45.6B (roughly double).
Fulfilment & logistics
Sellers self-fulfill or use platform logistics (TikTok Shipping); FBT (Fulfilled by TikTok) US warehouses offer stocked fulfillment; cross-border sellers can direct-ship or use overseas warehouses; Southeast Asia has built local logistics + integrated Tokopedia fulfillment. Delivery-time and shipping SLAs are governed by platform rules; lateness affects traffic weighting.
Payments & settlement
The platform collects payments centrally (USD settlement in the US); sellers link bank cards or third-party payout (Payoneer, etc.); settlement cycles follow platform policy; commissions and related fees are deducted from proceeds; under refund-only rules, buyer refunds are deducted directly from seller proceeds/deposits, squeezing cash flow.
Compliance
US ownership saga: in Jan 2026 ByteDance reached a divestiture agreement with the US side (majority US stake sold to a US consortium); execution of the deal, data/algorithm security, and subsequent legislation remain uncertain (UPI). Platform content and product rules apply (category admission, beauty FDA compliance, etc.); strict seller risk control/second reviews; an EU expansion would need to satisfy DSA/GPSR.
Key risks
1) Uncertain execution of the US divestiture (Congressional legislation, lingering state-ban fallout); 2) harsh seller ecosystem: multiple store-closure/frozen-funds rumors in 2025 and the deposit raised to $1,500; 3) refund-only rules plus high return rates squeeze margins (TT123); 4) Amazon/YouTube following with short-video shopping dilutes traffic, intensifying social-commerce competition, and platform governance (counterfeits/after-sales) affects consumer trust.
Best-fit sellers
Best for beauty, apparel, personal care, home, and novelty-small-item sellers with content-creation/creator resources who can quickly test hits and capture livestream conversion; small and mid-size brands can scale cheaply via creator affiliates. Not suitable for sellers without content capability or a pure shelf mindset, nor for thin-margin categories unable to absorb refund risk.
