QAs a merchant, how should I choose and lay out my e-commerce business here?

A practical guide for merchants: which platforms to prioritise in this region, in what order to enter, and what to watch out for.

How to choose a platform

Europe is a fragmented market: the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain dominate, spread across 25+ countries, multiple languages and multiple tax systems. Amazon is No. 1 across Europe (European GMV of roughly US$232 billion, about the sum of ranks 2–10); choose Zalando for fashion (29 countries, Plus membership ecosystem); Allegro for Poland and Central Europe (the strongest local mindshare); Vinted for secondhand fashion; and Temu/AliExpress for cross-border low price (though EU regulation keeps tightening). First decide your primary country (we suggest either the UK or Germany), then decide between single-site operations and Pan-EU FBA fulfillment.

Entry path & rollout

Suggested path: start with Amazon's European sites (UK VAT registration + Pan-EU FBA covering 9 countries), add Zalando for fashion (B2C + the ZEOS software ecosystem), use Allegro for Poland and other Central European markets, and evaluate Temu/AliExpress semi-managed (半托管) models for low-price/long-tail items. EU OSS one-stop VAT filing and EPR packaging/battery compliance are the entry thresholds — we suggest mastering the UK and Germany first, then expanding.

Watch-outs & risks

From July 2026 the EU will impose a €3-per-parcel duty on low-value small parcels and remove the €150 duty-free threshold, sharply raising costs for the direct-shipping low-price model; the DSA has already issued its two largest fines ever (€200 million for Temu, €550 million for AliExpress), and platform governance regulation is tightening; VAT varies widely by country (e.g. 23% in Italy); fashion return rates of 30%+ seriously erode profits; and eurozone consumer confidence is weak.

Platform quick-fit table

What type of seller each Top platform in this region fits best (click a platform for the full merchant analysis):

PlatformBest-fit sellers
AmazonBest for brand/factory sellers with a stable supply chain who can carry FBA inventory and advertising costs, and for merchants with a trademark who can enroll in Brand Registry. Full-category coverage; standardized categories like 3C, home, and baby products have clear volume advantages. Not suitable for thin-margin, undifferentiated, or cash-strapped newcomers — fees and competition will quickly eat gross margin; cross-region expansion (Europe/Japan/Middle East, etc.) requires simultaneously addressing VAT and local certifications.
TemuBest for Chinese factory/supply-chain sellers (fully managed: supply goods only, no operations) and sellers with US/EU overseas-warehouse capability (semi-managed); suited to white-label low-price standardized goods (apparel, home, 3C accessories, small general merchandise). Not suitable for sellers seeking brand premium, heavy compliance, or high-AOV categories — price orientation and regulatory risk will erode brand and profit.
ZalandoBest for: mid-to-high-end fashion/footwear/sports/beauty sellers with brand authorization, who can accept high fashion return rates and payment terms and value branding and membership repeat purchases — European-local or cross-border brands; the B2B channel (ZEOS/SCAYLE/Tradebyte) suits mature brands that already run their own e-commerce. Not suitable for: unbranded ultra-low-price white-label sellers (directly colliding with the Temu/Shein low-price segment) or lightweight small sellers who cannot bear return and VAT compliance costs.
AllegroBest for: low-to-mid-price full-category sellers targeting Poland and CEE (electronics, home, apparel, auto parts, collectibles, etc.) — Chinese/EU sellers with Polish-language capability or willing to use international seller services; the Smart! ecosystem suits high-frequency repeat-purchase, low-AOV volume models. Not suitable for: brands targeting the high-end Western European market without CEE localization capability, or small sellers unable to bear Smart! delivery costs.
VintedBest for: individual sellers and small B merchants clearing used-fashion inventory at zero cost (fast-turnover categories like fast fashion, childrenswear, sportswear), and closeout merchants with large volumes of slow-moving/used apparel; European consumers have a mature used-goods mindset and cross-border transactions are viable. Not suitable for: established brands needing flagship stores, customer-asset building, and controllable pricing (no store system, buyer-protection-fee controversy), or high-price bulky categories (high shipping/return costs).
